outdoor learning projects in Iðavellir
During our time with the children we spent the whole days outside, no-matter-the-weather, which they enjoyed, even though we got a chance to experience a bit of each season in these 8 weeks, including the snow.
Next to the free spontaneous play, we offered the children to do simple carpentry projects e.g. creating their own toys and decorations by using saw, hammer, nails etc.
Also they could experiment with their senses, concentrating on one at the time. For example to guess what herb is in a jar only by smelling it, and drawing the smell feeling afterwards, trying to connect the sense with imagination.. Or to guess what is in a bucket only by touching the object or what item makes which sound only by listening to it..
We also made trips with public transport to local botanical garden, got donated some flowers for which we created pots from milk cartons and took them into the old peoples home...
More than that happened, if you are interested you can find more about the project or the playschool here: http://www.idavollur.akureyri.is/utheimur_skyrsla.pdf
